Bio

For over 35 years, Coach Jackie Ponciano-Babb has shared her love of volleyball with many student-athletes at the high school, club and college level. This fall, she is in her 28^th year teaching and coaching at Diablo Valley College. Ponciano-Babb has many successful stories to share but the one that she’s proud most of is that mostly all the student-athletes that have played for her over the years have obtained a certificate or gone on and graduated with a degree. “I am proud to know that our program has given many young ladies an opportunity to continue competing in volleyball after high school.”  

Ponciano-Babb began her coaching journey in 1988 as an assistant coach for Club Sacramento VBC 16U girls’ team before moving over to coach the CSUS men’s JV club team in 1991 for two seasons. From there, Ponciano-Babb served as an assistant coach at the DII level (Humboldt State 1993 and UC Davis 1994) before landing the head coaching position at American River College (1995-1997). Ponciano-Babb lead the Beavers to the 1995 Bay Valley Conference Championship, while being voted Bay Valley Conference Coach of the Year. Her team ended the season, placed 5^th in COA State Championships and honored 1 athlete on the All-State & All NorCal teams plus 5 athletes on the Bay Valley All Conference teams. 

Knowing that we compete in the toughest conference in the north, our goal is to provide a competitive atmosphere that teaches our student-athletes how to challenge themselves and find success through cooperative team drills and match play.  We strive to end each year amongst the top teams in the North to ensure our journey continues in the CCCAA play-offs.  We welcome those who are interested in playing competitive volleyball every day to come out and join our ohana, our family.

In addition to her volleyball coaching duties, Ponciano-Babb has served as the Big 8 Volleyball Conference Rep (2014-16) and is on the Big 8 Conference General Assembly Committee (2009-present). Ponciano-Babb recently retired as the head coach for the men’s & women’s tennis teams (2010-2025) and will serve as Co-Department Chair Kinesiology & Athletics Department Chair (fall 2025).

Ponciano-Babb holds a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education and a Master of Science degree in Sports Performance from California State University, Sacramento.
