The Diablo Valley College women's soccer team scored six goals in a dizzying span of about 30 minutes in a 7-0 win over visiting Cosumnes River on Tuesday in the Big 8 Conference.
After Hannah Kidson scored to give the Vikings (6-4-5, 3-3-3, 12 points) a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute, Diablo Valley turned it into a blowout as six players scored in the second half.
Gabby Silva and Julia Curran started the siege with goals in the 51st and 53rd minutes, followed by Kidson's second goal in 55th. Hailey Sigur, Daissy Lozano and Hannah Harris rounded out the scoring.
Curran, Silva, Amanda Gomez and Andrea Weinstein had assists. Keeper Katie McGlaughlin, fronted by a well-organized back line, had a strong game with three saves for the shutout. Curran leads the Vikings with 14 points, on five goals and four assists.
The Vikings' offense has been clicking after a slow start this season, in which DVC scored six times total in their first nine games. Diablo Valley now has 16 goals in its past six matches.
Diablo Valley, which opens the season on Nov. 6-8 at the Mission College tournament, is ranked No. 1 in Northern California in the CCCWBA Preseason Poll. Guided by coach Ramaundo Vaughn, the talented Vikings are excited to get rolling again.
The Vikings, the Big 8 runner-up last season, are ranked 15th in the CCCMBCA preseason state poll, and eighth in the North.
Diablo Valley, guided by Steve Coccimiglio, will open the season against Butte on Nov. 5 in the Las Positas tournament.
Women's water polo
The Vikings (19-2, 5-1) avenged their lone conference loss with a dramatic 9-8 win against San Joaquin Delta in the Battle of the Beach, hosted by Long Beach City.
The Vikings also won a 9-6 thriller over Golden West in overtime, and fell to defending state champion Fullerton 9-5.
The Vikings fell to visiting Delta 14-11 on Oct. 6 in the Big 8, in a matchup of NorCal super powers.
DVC travels to Santa Rosa on Wednesday as it prepares for the Big 8 Conference Championship Nov. 5-7.
The Vikings (6-9, 2-5) bested Modesto 3-1 as Jade Lee led the way with 12 kills. The scores were 25-18, 26-24, 17-25, 25-20.
Taylor Patton had 10 kills for DVC, and Noelle Vleisides had nine kills. Jamie Chow had 19 assists.
The Vikings are at Sierra in Rocklin on Wednesday and host Santa Rosa on Friday.
Diablo Valley (4-3, 2-0), ranked No. 8 in Northern California, will travel to No. 1 City College of San Francisco (6-1, 2-0) on Saturday, in a battle for sole possession of first place in the National Bay 6. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
Drew Anderson (Miramonte) continues to lead the state by a wide margin in passing yards, averaging 370.9 a game. He also tops the state in touchdown completions with 28, after amassing five TD strikes with no interceptions in a 52-13 win over Foothill on Friday at Viking Stadium.
CJ Cornwell (California) leads the state by 12 receptions with 70 catches and in receiving yards per game at 127.7
Men's and Women's Cross Country
The Vikings will travel to Santa Rosa on Friday for the Big 8 Conference Championship.
