Bailey Simmons was 4 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs as the DVC softball team advanced to the CCCAA Northern Super Regional for the second straight year with a 6-1 win over Merced on Sunday in the Regional playoffs..
The teams split the first two games of a best-of-three series, with DVC prevailing 6-1 on Saturday afternoon and Merced winning 8-2 in Sunday's first game.
But the Vikings showed an iron will on Sunday afternoon, rebounding for the clinching win. All-State pitcher Nicole Nordahl fired a four-hitter and allowed no earned runs.
The Vikings, seeded 7th, will face No. 2 seed and host Fresno City on Friday in the four-team, double-elimination Super Regional.
The winners of the northern and southern super regionals will advance to the state championship.
In Sunday's win, the Vikings struck five times in the top of the sixth to break a 1-1 tie.
In addition to Simmons' massive game, slugger Cynthia Duenas was 1 for 4 with a double and two RBIs, and center fielder Laurel Poff was 3 for 4 with a run scored.
In Saturday's 6-1 win, Duenas belted a three-run home run and Nordahl also fired a four-hitter. Simmons had two hits, and Julia Pelletier had a clutch two-run single.
Last year, the Vikings advanced to the semifinals of the Super Regionals.
